What is Colon Detox?

Friday, August 6th, 2010

With so many diet and weight loss plans on the market, you may be wondering what does and does not work. Colon detox is one of the newer trends you may be looking into as a means to maintaining a healthy weight. Although you may know that colon health is a key to keeping the body running optimally, you may not know exactly how it works.

A colonic irrigation or colon cleansing diet can take many forms. However, the process entails the same thing: it removes chemicals, old fecal matter, parasites and pollutants but it also flushes out good and bad bacteria, mucus, and nutrients from the colon. If you should undergo either of these measures, you will need to give your body time to replenish the healthy elements that are lost in the process such as electrolytes and good bacteria. In other words, do not overdo colon detox.

Still, a colon cleanse may be a good idea for those who show symptoms of adverse health such as allergies, bloating, lack of concentration, sinus congestion and sluggishness as all are signs of poor colon health. One way to perform a natural colon cleanse is through a diet of strictly fruits and vegetable or a juice fast. Keep in mind that this is not a permanent diet solution but rather a part of the process.

You can go through a colon detox by way of a clinical procedure, diet or medications. Like all diet plans, you should consult with a doctor before undertaking such the experience. Remember, a colon cleanse alone will not help you lose weight but clears the body of the unhealthy elements that prevent maintaining a healthy weight.

While colon health is important, it is only one of the factors in a successful diet or weight loss program. There are no quick solutions and there is no scientific proof that detox diets alone work.
